Top 5 Kids Experiences in the Riviera Maya
Swim with Dolphins “The Sea Life Discovery Program”
Among the smartest animals on the planet, dolphins are surprisingly willing to get up close and personal with us and what an experience that is. You may never find another activity better suited to generate joy and awe in your child. Dolphin Discovery is rated the top operator in the region and they offer the Sea Life Discovery program that in addition to dolphin swims includes interactive opportunities with manatees and sea lions. Don’t miss this.
Called a petting zoo by many, Crococun goes beyond that. The quality of the information provided by informed staffers who clearly appreciate their charges and love their work gives meaning and breath to the experience. Children are encouraged (with proper guidance) to touch, feed and ask questions about the park’s birds, deer, crocodiles and other reptiles, animals they’ve been taught to fear. Each animal’s indispensable role and proper place in the environment is explained. Kids love this zoo. Another Must Do.
Xcaret Park has so much going on for kids and for the entire family it’s hard to know where to start: aquatic activities, a beach, pools and lagoons, dolphins, sea turtles, butterfly pavilion, wild jungle animals and more. Lots of things to do and lots of places to kick back and chill. Restaurants galore. This is easily an all-day affair. Bring bathing suits and a change of clothes just in case you may want to take in the afterdark Mexican-themed floor show which is very well produced.
Snorkeling at Xel Ha
Developed by the same folks that gave us Xcaret and with the same eco saavy and sustainable use concepts. In addition to snorkeling the fish-filled canals, there’s biking, kite-flying and a special kid’s playground with paddling pool, water slide, rope climb, seesaw, crocodile tunnel, turtles and the wherewithal for drawing and painting. Harried parents can observe their offspring while relaxing in one of the many hammocks set up nearby.
Snorkeling with Turtles
The best place to snorkel with sea turtles in their natural environment is Akumal Bay, about 100 km south of Cancun. Named ‘place of the turtle’ in Maya for a reason, these benign, serene sea creatures roam close to shore in Akumal feeding on the sea grasses sprouting from the ocean floor. Go early, avoid the crowds.
